Do you think accounting careers will hit a bottoming out like IT careers did after the dot com bust?

I'm considering accounting as a degree, but now with how popular it seems to be, I'm thinking about a business admin degree, or computer science. For some reason I think people are taking accounting as the easiest to attain of practical degree's, and I think it's going to hit a bubble point, and pretty soon we'll see accountants working at starbucks like the IT people did after the dot com bust.

  1. I just saw this article today: http://hotjobs.yahoo.com/career-articles-career_to_count_on_accounting_is_more_popular_than_ever-467 The article claims accounting is a pretty rock solid career choice. And it makes sense. Like the article says, businesses will always need accountants. And even in hard times like now, there is still a need for accountants to figure out where, who, and what went wrong and to help get companies/banks/whoever back on track. So I don't think a bubble will burst on accountants. You called accounting a practical degree. Just like health care or engineering (for example), there's always going to be a need for accountants. That is what makes it practical! There's always going to be someone sick or injured who needs help from a doctor or nurse. Roads, buildings, etc will continue to be constructed and need good engineers to make sure they don't fall apart. And as long as there is commerce, there's going to be a need for someone to keep track of the money. So if accounting is what you are interested in, go for it.
  2. I've not seen anything close to a glut of accountants yet. In public accounting, especially, many baby boomers are looking to retire shortly, and I know many who really have few options for internal candidates who can take over their business. Consistently, the shortage of potential employees is one of the major problems accounting firms face. I don't see you going wrong with accounting.
