What are the negatives of curbing margin trading on oil commodities? And do they outweigh the burden placed on the economy from record high oil prices? I'm not in the field, but based on my research I've come to the conclusion, that record high oil prices are the result of market speculation. Sure demand has its part, but speculation is over inflating the real value of oil and negatively impacting the economy beyond any benefit I can imagine from allowing liquidity in margin trading. So to reassert my question: Would requiring oil traders to actually take delivery of oil and thereby reducing liquidity in oil trading benefit the economy by quickly reducing oil prices worldwide or harm the economy in the long run?

Trading on Margin and unsettled funds...? I had a question about margin trading with regards to unsettled funds. Here is my (hypothetical) situation: I have a margin account with $25,000.00 cash in it. I have 4x margin buying power, but I use only cash on Monday to trade $25,000.00 cash. Since it takes 3 days for the cash to settle on the sale of equities, would I have to wait until Thursday to resume trading, since the initial margin requirement is 50%? Or could I trade on Tuesday and Wednesday using just margin, and not my own cash? I am kind of confused on this, so any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Q.2 - let say I have margin in my trading account and $20,000(unsettled, 1 more day for the money to get settled). How does margin trading work for the stock market? How does margin trading work for the stock? Hey everyone. I'm 19 and I know that right now, the stock can be a very good thing to invest in. I've turned 200 into 3k so far, but that took 2 months of day trading... I read about margin trading and it has caught my interest. From what I read, it seems it is basically like a loan. Right now I buy low cost stocks, 50 cents per share, etc. So, does it work like this? I borrow say, 10k. Which I could then use that 10k to buy 20k shares for .50cents per share? Then if It goes up 50 cents, I would pay them back the 10k, and keep my 10k profit?

Which online brokerage is easy to get approved for margin trading? I use TD Ameritrade. I am a college student so I only have time to work part time, therefore my annual income is not too large. I am not from a wealthy family so my net worth isnt too high either. But I have over a 120% ROI since january so I know what I am doing with stocks. TD would not approve me for margin trading. Is there any other website that would approve me any easier? Edit: I have about 7000 in my account
can margin interest be used to reduce net gains on margin stock trades for tax purposes? My total net gain from my margin account is 10k for 2006. IRS asks me to report this as part of my gross income. My real cost for making margin trades besides brokerage fees include margin interest and the total for 2006 is 1k. This cost is not reflected on the numbers that are provided by my brokerage to the IRS. Using my monthly statements, i can add the applicable margin interest to the cost of each transaction so that in total, my net gain for the year would be 10k-1k = 9k. Has anybody done this and is this legal? IRS tells me that i can only report the interest cost as a deduction which i may not be able to use if i take the standard deduction. This seems patently unfair. Does anybody know if there is any other way to report the margin interest so it reduces my gross income?
